Ribbons:

French Ribbon Sizing: Imported ribbons sometimes vary slightly in size, as much as 1/8" larger or smaller than the stated size. We note the closest industry standard size in our description. Please take that into consideration when ordering.

Petersham Grosgrain Ribbon: Our petersham is a 100% rayon ribbon ideal for use in millinery and dressmaking. It differs from regular grosgrain in that it has an open, saw-tooth edge which allows it to form a curve. This quality makes it ideal for facings on skirt and trouser waistbands. This also allows it to lay flat, rather than create puckers or gaps when laid against the inside or outside of a hat crown. Gentle steaming can help in this process.

Hand-Dyed Silk and Hand-Dyed Velvet Bias Ribbons: Due to the creative process by which these ribbons are manufactured, the color distribution and saturation can vary considerably from lot to lot. This is part of the charm of these hand-crafted items and should be taken into consideration when ordering. These hand-dyed ribbons are made from fabric that is cut on the bias, so have diagonal seams along their length. Please take this feature into account when planning projects. Unseamed yardage cannot be guaranteed.

Lace Trims:

Lace Fiber Content: We make every effort to note the fiber content of all of our lace trims, however we will note it only if we have written confirmation from the manufacturer or distributor.

Buttons:

Button Sizing: Ligne is a sizing system for buttons that traces its roots to the system of measurements used in France before the adoption of the metric system in the 18th century. Ligne is still the internationally recognized standard for button sizing. A ligne measurement is inches divided by .0888, or cm divided by 2.2558. Domed and Thick Buttons Sizing: For domed and thicker button sizing conversions, it is crucial that you refer to our button size chart. Thicker or domed buttons may require a longer buttonhole.

Shank Buttons: A button with a loop on the back for stitching the button onto your garment. Shanks come in a variety of styles, but they all function in the same way. Please refer to our button backing chart for illustrations of the various styles of button shanks.
